Broken cross-references in Word: Part 2

I find the behaviour of the Cross-reference dialog in Word occassionally flakey. Opening the dialog and inserting a cross-reference works fine, but sometimes on the second, or third, or some-random-number-th insert, you start getting references to different content than you selected for no obvious reason. Usually, closing and reopening the dialog makes it behave itself. However, exasperation with this intermittent unreliability led me to adapt my process for inserting cross-references with page numbers to halve the number of times I used the dialog. The method I now use is also far more reliable in ensuring that both elements of the cross-reference are pointing at the same destination (if the page number reference is targetting the wrong place, that’s not at all obvious when you do a global update of references). Backing up your social media content

Backups are important. I’m sure you’re already in the habit of backing up your laptop and smartphone to protect your vital data. You probably use some cloud services to store original or backup data off site where you can get at it from any machine, even if your local device dies or is stolen or whatever. The photos, the life events, the funny comments shared with friends? Take action now and back up your social media content, and stick a reminder in your diary to do so again at an interval that makes sense for you, whether you’re a casual user, or an addict like me! Multiple Skype Sessions on Mac

Last week’s post on running multiple Skype sessions on Windows was a big hit – clearly this is something that more people than just me want to be able to do! I had a query in on whether it was possible to do the same on a Mac, but couldn’t find a straightforward solution: I still haven’t found a particularly straightforward solution, but I have found a way to be logged into two accounts simultaneously on a Mac, if that’s any help! Running Multiple Instances of Skype Simultaneously

Most companies I work with these days either ask me to set up a dedicated Skype account for business purposes, or set one up for me. If you’re trying to stay available to multiple groups of people, being stuck with just one Skype login at a time is somewhat restricting. Turns out, on Windows you can log into multiple accounts at the same time if you run Skype using the /secondary flag! Continue reading “Running Multiple Instances of Skype Simultaneously”
